Forensic Fuel Evaluation

Historic releases prompts need for forensic fuel evaluation for site redevelopment project.

Modern Geosciences was retained by a Responsible Party connected with multiple comingled releases to evaluate prior investigation data concerning types of releases, age of release, primary sources, remedial strategies, and vapor intrusion concerns for new construction. The site included a nearby planned airport hangar, office buildings, plane maintenance, and retail gas station. Prior “fingerprinting” had been attempted by two other parties, but both efforts suffered from flawed data collection methodology that colored the final interpretations. These prior efforts did not account for preferential biological degradation, abiotic degradation, preferential lithologic transport mechanisms, impact of low density product to groundwater head pressures, and a poor understanding of operational histories. Fuels included AvGas, Jet A, and unleaded gasoline with oxygenates.
